So you want to try a virtual Pilates group class but you’re nervous about how it will go? You are not alone! Up until a few months ago teaching online was not in my plan. But COVID-19 wasn’t in any of our plans, and the group classes that have evolved out of this pandemic have been nothing short of amazing.
We’ve turned everyday household goods – soup cans, dictionaries, and dining room chairs – into Pilates props. We’ve created time when people from anywhere in the world can virtually come together to move their bodies, tune out their stresses, and find community.
I’m here to walk you through exactly what a group class at Northwoods Pilates will look like – from the time you contact us until we’re finishing our last exercise and signing off of Zoom. If you have any questions after reading this, please do not hesitate to reach out. We truly believe that Pilates will improve your life, and we cannot wait for you to join.
Check out our group class schedule and find one of the classes marked “All Levels” if you are new to Pilates. If you’ve practiced Pilates elsewhere, you can start with an “All Levels” or an “Intermediate” class.
Make contact with us (via Facebook, Instagram, or email – cassie@northwoodspilates.com), and Cassie will reach out to you about signing an electronic waiver. This is a one-time waiver that can be signed electronically through the program DocHub, or if you prefer, Cassie can email you the document as a PDF and you can sign it and scan it back.
To register for class, simply email us or reach out via Facebook or Instagram and let us know which class you’d like to take.
We use a platform called Zoom for virtual classes. If you already have been using Zoom for other virtual meetings, then go ahead and skip to the next section. If you haven’t been using Zoom, you’ll need to install Zoom before you join your first class. It’s generally a quick and easy process. I’ve written more about it here.
Cassie logs onto each class 15 minutes before it begins. You’re welcome to log on too and chat with the other group class members. This little dose of community does wonders when we’re living in an isolated world! Plus, as you return for more and more classes you’ll start to recognize these friendly faces!
When it’s time to begin class, Cassie will mute everyone’s device but hers. You can leave your video on or turn it off – whatever makes you the most comfortable.
Classes last 50 minutes. During that time Cassie will demonstrate the exercises as she verbally cues the movements. She’ll offer modifications on exercises to make them easier and/or more challenging. We end every class with a standing roll down.
After class, Cassie will say goodbye and you can click “leave meeting” to end the session.
The group classes are free of charge, but donations are welcomed! The recommended donation is $20/class, but we want you to join whether you can donate or not. Donations are accepted via check, credit card, and PayPal. Information on how to donate is included with each group class email.
Yes! Pilates is for every body! We’d love to have you join! Email cassie@northwoodspilates.com to get started.
