It’s estimated that up to 80% of Americans will suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives. As a society, we sit too long, move too little, and wear restrictive shoes, which can all contribute to low back pain.
One common cause of low back pain is muscle imbalance. When the hamstrings (backs of the legs) are really tight and the abdominal muscles are weaker, your body may shift the tension to your low back. Pilates works to balance the body and relieve that low back tension by stretching the backs of your legs and strengthening your abdominal muscles.
If you suffer intermittently with low back pain, try this Gentle Pilates workout. The only thing you’ll need besides some space to move around is a blanket or a couple of firm pillows to act as a bolster under your body for a few of the movements.
