Monica began Pilates in 2015 and has been taking a weekly private session with Cassie at Northwoods Pilates since 2016. She uses Pilates to achieve better posture and more flexibility. During her Pilates sessions, she’s able to focus on her body and well-being in ways that she cannot during the rest of the week.
Cassie: Alright, Monica, what first brought you to Pilates?
Monica: In 2015, I was visiting my parents in Brazil and I noticed that they were loving their Pilates practice. However, I was not aware of what Pilates was, so I decided to have a session at the Pilates studio in their neighborhood. I loved it and I was fascinated by the equipment and by how creative and innovative Joe Pilates was. Since that summer, I have been practicing Pilates and I have the same passions that my parents do. Once a week when I’m practicing Pilates it’s my time to be aware of my body, to think about my body, how I’m treating my body, and how I’m feeling. We all have very busy schedules and having a moment to slow down, for me, it’s absolutely necessary.
Cassie: Oh, that’s perfect. Thank you. What benefits have you seen from a regular Pilates practice?
Monica: For me, Pilates is important for my posture and flexibility. Once you start practicing, you begin to be more aware of what you can do, and at the same time challenging yourself to try new movements. I like to go out for walks, and I know that when I’m walking I am aware of my posture because of Pilates. Concerning flexibility, my Pilates practice makes me progress a little bit each week.
Cassie: Why do you choose to practice Pilates here at Northwoods Pilates in Ankeny?
Monica: There are some Pilates studios in central Iowa, but none like Northwoods Pilates. Cassie, by far, is the best Pilates instructor I ever had, and believe me, I had more than a handful. Her studio is very well-equipped, very clean, and very calm. I take private sessions with her and I feel that during that time she’s totally devoted to myself; to her clients. She’s always exploring new exercise very creatively, and besides, she’s a sweetheart.
Cassie: Aww, thank you. Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering starting Pilates?
Monica: Yes, many people don’t try Pilates because of the price, but I can guarantee it’s money well spent. Our body needs to be well-treated and Pilates is the best investment you can do to improve your health by taking very good care of your body.
