This blog goes out to all the tired moms out there.
I see you, with your hair in a messy bun, having to think hard about how many days it’s been since you last showered. It’s not that you don’t love your littles deeply, with your whole heart, but some days if they ask you to watch them be a ballerina or jump off the couch one more time, you just may lose your mind.
As a member of the tired moms club, I’ve been thinking a lot about what being a mom means and how it can be all-consuming.
I run my own business and spend most of my non-business time doing more work (because it never really turns off) or hanging out with my kids. Regardless of where the balance strikes, I always wonder whether I’m doing enough. Add onto that the expectations on moms to constantly be doing more to add value to our kids’ lives while simultaneously hearing from the generation above us to “love every minute” because “it goes too fast,” and the mental pressure can be too much. Some days I’m just exhausted.
There are no magic bullets that I’ve found to nailing this whole mommy thing (if you have – let me know!) but taking care of myself is probably as close as I can get.
As the saying goes, “you cannot pour from an empty cup.” I practice Pilates several times a week as I teach virtual group classes, and I love it. Even on the day when my stretch marks turn red and my mom pooch sticks out, my gray hairs stand up straight and my eye bags are puffy, I never regret the time I spend breathing and moving.
Practicing Pilates does as much for my mental health as it does for my physical health.
I feel stronger, taller, and more flexible, but I also feel calmer, happier, and more capable. After a Pilates workout, I feel like I’ve settled back into my body and am able to be present in a more meaningful way.
In 2020 my in-person studio moved entirely online to help slow the spread of COVID. I’ve been teaching live group classes, along with private and duet sessions, but I really wanted to create something that would be useful to the tired moms (and let’s be honest, the dads are tired too).
I wanted short sessions that relied heavily on mind-body connection and could be done at home with minimal equipment.
